Citizen Science Projects

Citizen Science Projects

Penrith City Council is collaborating with residents to collect valuable wildlife data through citizen science initiatives. This approach enables the community to contribute to scientific research by gathering data on local wildlife, helping monitor species, track biodiversity, and understand ecosystems. The information gathered will guide conservation efforts, inform policies, and support strategies to protect natural habitats. By participating, residents contribute to a more sustainable, wildlife-friendly future for Penrith.

Record Your Wildlife Sightings!

We’ve installed signage at eight locations to raise awareness of local wildlife and promote conservation efforts across our beautiful natural areas. We invite residents, visitors, and nature enthusiasts to engage in citizen science by taking photos of animals they spot and noting the locations where they’re seen!

The eight locations include:

  • Emu Green Reserve
  • Fowler Reserve
  • Regatta Park
  • Mountain View Reserve
  • Werrington Lakes Reserve
  • Devlin Road, Nepean River
  • Tench Reserve – along the Great River Walk
  • Weir Reserve - along the Great River Walk

We installed these signs to highlight the diverse range of wildlife species that inhabit these areas and encourage community participation in recording wildlife sightings.

How You Can Participate

It’s easy to get involved! If you’re out exploring one of these reserves and come across any wildlife — whether it’s a bird, mammal, reptile, or fish — take a photo and note the location. You can upload your sightings to iNaturalist or Council depending on what you found.

Your contributions will help us map out the biodiversity across our reserves, providing valuable data for ongoing conservation efforts and enhancing our understanding of the local ecosystem.
