With more than 150 playspaces across the Local Government Area, Penrith City Council has an ongoing program to upgrade these spaces to ensure they are modern and inclusive for current and future residents.
Council is upgrading 40 playspaces between 2019-2024 with new equipment, surface upgrades, seating, tree planting, shade, landscaping and pathways. These playspaces were identified through Council’s Sport and Recreation Strategy.
In 2022, Council completed its three-year program to install shade sails and plant trees at 98 playspaces throughout the city.
Social stories
Social stories are a communication tool that supports neurodiverse children and families plan for activities. Social stories use images and words to provide details about what to expect and types of behaviours in social situations.
Council commissioned three social stories to support individuals and families to enjoy local play spaces. Social stories are available for print and download for:

A network of 21 playspaces across the City will be transformed with new equipment, surface upgrades, seating, tree planting, shade, landscaping and pathways.
These playspaces form part of Council’s commitment to upgrade 40 playspaces between 2019-2024, and include:

These projects are being funded by the NSW Government through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program ($7.56 million) in partnership with Council.
Construction is being staged from 2023 through 2026.

There is a modern playspace at Brian King Reserve in Oxley Park for local families to enjoy thanks to the fresh ideas and creative minds of students from Oxley Park Public School.
Students from years 5 and 6 at Oxley Park Public School co-designed the playspace as part of Council’s 2019 Penrith Mayoral Challenge program.
The playspace features a variety of play equipment, softfall, a bike track, accessible pathways, picnic shelter, park furniture and shade sails.

In 2018, a talented group of young leaders from St Marys Public School designed the new playspace at Cook Park in St Marys as part of Council’s Penrith Mayoral Challenge program. The students helped to engage with their local community to design the new playspace which includes new play equipment, a flying fox, shade sail, new seating and footpaths.
Damien Avenue & Joanna Street, South Penrith

David Currie Playspace is a fully fenced, inclusive playspace with a variety of equipment for all ages and abilities including an accessible spinner, climbing net and slide, multi-bay swing, sensory play and an inclusive double flying fox.
It also includes fitness equipment, a basketball half court, seating, an accessible bike track, shade sails, and picnic shelter.
Car parking is available at Peter Kearns Memorial Oval, which is accessed via Solander Drive. A footpath connects the car park to the playspace.
David Currie Playspace also has an amenities building including; unisex family change area, unisex ambulant toilet, MLAK-fitted accessible toilet and MLAK-fitted adult change facility.

The 32-hectare Gipps Street Recreation Precinct features:
- an inclusive and fenced playspace with a variety of equipment for all ages including a flying fox, climbing tower, slides, accessible spinners and trampolines, balance beams, shade, picnic tables and seating.

This playspace features a multi-play unit built to feel like a treehouse with a double slide, toddler play hut, animal-shaped rocker, three swings including a basket swing, seating, water bubbler, and mature trees providing natural shade.

Livvi’s Place is an inclusive playspace featuring a variety of inclusive play equipment including swings, accessible trampolines, spinner, a rock climbing wall, water play area, sandpit, shade, BBQs, picnic shelters, bench seating, accessible pathways and ramps, amenities building with adult-sized change space, and parking.
This playspace is fully fenced.

Ridgeview Crescent, Erskine Park
This playspace features an embankment slide, climbing equipment, swing set with a basket swing, layback see-saw, sensory panel, shade sails, shaded picnic table, seating, pathways, and mature trees providing natural shade.
Maple & Sycamore Street, North St Marys
This unique playspace was the result of a masterplan created with local residents in 2018. The first stages were completed in 2019-2020. There are two covered playspaces, colourful softfall climbing cones and a popular 600 metre walking circuit. Other features include picnic shelters with wheelchair accessible tables, accessible parking, solar lighting, water station and seating throughout the park.
Glenbrook Street, Jamisontown
Council completed a relocation and upgrade of the playspace in Robinson Park in 2021. The playspace includes modern play equipment, bench seating, accessible picnic table and shelter, shade sails and landscaping.

The students helped to engage with their local community to design the new playspace which includes climbing equipment, a slide and swings, toddler play, stepper logs, mini soccer goals, a handball court, shade sails, modern landscaping, upgraded footpaths and wheelchair accessible picnic areas.

This playspace was upgraded in 2023 thanks to the creative minds of students from Llandilo Public School. It features climbing equipment, a swing set including an accessible swing, multi-play unit with slide, outdoor fitness equipment, shade sails, a picnic tables, bike rack and bench seating.
An amenities building was completed in early 2024. It includes a unisex toilet and unisex ambulant toilet with baby change tables, and a MLAK-fitted unisex accessible toilet.
