The Nepean River is our region’s greatest natural asset and a much-loved recreational destination for residents and visitors. Several projects are underway to improve amenity, provide open space, and create opportunities to meet, relax, explore, play and be active.

This picturesque reserve on the banks of the Nepean River is a popular and much-loved spot for picnics, events, playing and exercise. Facilities inlclude boat ramp, toilets, undercover seating areas, free BBQs and two playgrounds.

Lighting Upgrade

Installation of new pedestrian light poles along the parkland footpath from Jamison Road to the start of Nepean Ave is underway to improve night-time safety and walkability. Estimated to be completed in July 2022. This $1 million project is being funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.
Nepean Avenue Pathway

A new 2.5 metre wide shared pathway wll be constructed along Nepean Avenue. This $2.5million project is co-funded by Penrith City Council and a Metropolitan Greenspace Program grant. Consultation is due to start soon.
Nepean Rowing Boatshed Upgrade

The boatshed at the Nepean Rowing Club is getting a $1 million upgrade. The upgrade is currently being planned and is expected to get underway in 2023-2024. Police Cottage Upgrade

The Police Cottage is an important local heritage feature of Emu Plains. The restoration of this building into a destination dining experience (cafe/restaurant) is proudly funded by Penrith City Council and the NSW Government. Construction is expected to start late 2021/early 2022 and be completed late 2022.

Regatta Park Kiosk

A key feature of the new 112m long pavilion at Regatta Park, will be a new 88sqm kiosk. Funded and delivered by Penrith City Council, the kiosk will be a café style space delivering dine in and takeaway food and drink options.
Regatta Park Upgrade

Regatta Park is receiving a $24 million upgrade funded by Penrith City Council and the Western Sydney City Deal Western Parkland City Liveability Program. A new $10 million open space park is being developed and delivered by the NSW Government’s Parks for People Program. Construction will commence in early 2022 and be completed by late 2022. Vegetation Management
Bush Regeneration

A three-year program of vegetation management work, funded by the Australian Government through the Environmental Restoration Fund is being rolled out along the riverbank. This includes removing and controlling exotic weeds, trees, and vines; planting appropriate native species (groundcover) to help stabilise the bank and creating a mown edge alongside the upper footpath.
Fish Habitat Project - Emu Heights

Penrith Council and the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are restoring fish habitat at Emu Green Reserve. The project introduces woody debris, such as root balls and logs, back into the river systems to help create natural habitat. The Penrith Weir was constructed in 1908 to regulate the water flow in the Nepean River. Over time, the Weir has become a popular bathing spot for birds and other wildlife and it’s a magical location to see at any time of day.

Shared pathway

Council has constructed a new shared path running from the M4 overpass along Tench Avenue to just south of Jamison Road. This pathway is part of the 7km Great River Walk 'Bridge to Bridge' loop.

Yandhai Nepean Crossing

A pedestrian bridge offering pedestrians and cyclists a safe way to cross the Nepean River while offering spectacular views. The bridge connects to the Great River Walk 'Birdge to Bridge' loop and can be accessed from River Road on the Western Side or from Memorial Ave on the Eastern Side of the Nepean River.
