We have a dedicated page on iNaturalist for wildlife sightings in Penrith! It’s easy to use, and is one of the best ways we can record the animals spotted in Penrith. If you’ve spotted an animal and have taken a picture, upload it to iNaturalist!
How to Upload Wildlife Sightings to iNaturalist
Recording your sightings is easy. Simply go to the iNaturalist website or app, create an account, and add your observations. For more detailed instructions, see the steps below.
Download the iNaturalist App
For iPhone: Visit the App Store nd search for "iNaturalist." Tap "Download" to install.
For Android: Visit the Google Play Store and search for "iNaturalist." Tap "Install."
Alternatively, you can use iNaturalist through your web browser.
Step 1: Create an Account or Log In
1. Open the iNaturalist app or website.
2. If you’re a new user, tap "Sign Up" to create an account using your email or through Google/Facebook.
3. If you already have an account, simply log in.
Step 2: Record Your Wildlife Sighting
Open the website or app and tap the "observe" button or visit the iNaturalist website and click "Upload" in the top right-hand corner of the page.
Take a Photo: Use your phone’s camera or upload a photo of the wildlife you’ve spotted. Make sure the image is clear and in focus.
Add Details:
- Species: Enter the species name if you know it. If you don’t know the species name, add a generic name and a member of our community will help you identify it once it is uploaded.
- Location: Make sure your GPS is enabled so your location is automatically recorded.
- Date/Time: Confirm or adjust the date and time of your sighting.
4. Description (Optional): Add any notes about the sighting (e.g., behaviour, habitat).
Step 4: Submit Your Sighting
- Once all details are added, tap "Save" or "Submit" to upload your observation to iNaturalist.
Step 5: Review and Share
- After your sighting is submitted, you can view it on your profile. You may also receive feedback from the iNaturalist community to help identify your species.
Additional Tips:
You can upload multiple photos per sighting if needed.
The more specific your location, the better! The location of the animal you spotted is extremely important. But if you prefer privacy, you can adjust the location visibility in settings.
