Gipps Street Recreation Precinct: GRAND OPENING EVENT!

Join us for the grand opening of Penrith’s new sport and recreation destination!

On Saturday 31 August 2024, Penrith City Council will officially open the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct in Claremont Meadows.

The precinct will be open from 11am and the event take place from 11am until 3pm.

Precinct gates will be locked at 10.30pm.

What you can expect on the day

In the youth zone:

  • free beginner and intermediate skateboarding workshops, and jam sessions, with prizes up for grabs! Spots are limited. Book here.
  • parkour and pump track demonstrations
  • three-on-three basketball
  • bike repair workshops
  • origami workshops

On the sports fields and courts:

  • Sydney Thunder are bringing the Thunder Bus for some fun games and giveaways
  • drop in for mini netball games with Giants Netball
  • gridiron clinics with the Nepean Ducks
  • soccer clinics with the Nepean Football Association
  • Sydney Regional Aboriginal Corporation Deadly Touch Tag
  • fitness demonstrations

And more:

  • face painting 
  • garden games
  • make your own kite workshops
  • weaving workshops
  • roving entertainment
  • live music
  • trackless train rides
  • free hot beverages and sausage sizzle with vegetarian and halal options - until allocation exhausted. Limit of one per person.
  • food trucks

What you'll find in the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct

Come along and explore 32-hectares of exciting new facilities including:

  • youth zone with skate park, pump track, parkour, and multi-sport courts
  • floodlit sports fields
  • children’s playspace with water play - water play will be operational on opening day
  • nature playspace and trail
  • cricket practice facilities
  • outdoor fitness equipment
  • picnic and BBQ areas, plus so much more!

The new dog park will be closed for this event to give the grass more time to establish in the area.

How to get there

The Gipps Street Recreation Precinct is on the corner of the Great Western Highway and Gipps Street, Claremont Meadows.

There are hundreds of parking spaces throughout the precinct, however we're expecting a large crowd for the opening event, so we encourage you to consider other forms of transport if possible.

FREE event shuttle bus

We will have two free shuttle buses running from 10.30am until 4.30pm with pick up and drop off points at:

  • Caddens Oval, corner of Caddens Road and Heaton Avenue, Caddens
  • The Kingsway Sports Precinct (near fields 1-3), The Kingsway, Werrington
  • St Marys Train Station - Kiss and Ride, Nariel Street, St Marys
  • Gipps Street Recreation Precinct, 34 Gipps Street, Claremont Meadows

The loop will take approximately 15 minutes.

Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances there will not be a wheelchair accessible bus available. There are accessible car parking spaces within the precinct for those who drive to the event. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you are walking or bike riding

Pedestrians and cyclists can access the precinct via the entrance near the corner of Gipps Street and Fowler Street. There are bike racks available in the precinct.

If you are driving

Vehicles can access the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct via the intersection of Gipps Street and the northern end of Sunflower Drive. 

There's plenty of parking throughout the precinct, however we're expecting a large crowd for the opening event, so we encourage you to consider parking nearby and catching our free event shuttle bus or walking to the event.

Nearby parking is available at:

  • Myrtle Road Reserve, corner of Myrtle Road and San Diego Street, Claremont Meadows
  • Caddens Oval, corner of Caddens Road and Heaton Avenue, Caddens 

If you are catching public transport

The nearest train station is St Marys Station. You can catch the 770 bus and get off at the bus stop on the corner of Sunflower Drive and Werona Avenue, Claremont Meadows. From here, you can walk across the road to the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct.
