Urban Rivers Project

Urban Rivers Project

Penrith Council is working with the community to implement improvements to Jerry’s Creek and Crossman Reserve in Wallacia.

In 2025, $970,600 was allocated to Council through the NSW Government’s Department of Industry, Sciences and Resources (DISR) ‘Urban Rivers and Catchments Program’ to complete the project.

The project will benefit populations of platypus, native fish, birdlife and amphibians within the riparian corridor of Jerrys Creek at Wallacia through on-ground works focused on water quality and habitat improvement. The project will remove significant weed infestations from the riparian corridor and improve stormwater discharges into the waterway through a system of sediment traps, vegetated raingardens and modifications to existing ponds.

Work on the project commenced in 2025 and is planned to be completed in 2028.

The bush regeneration and biodiversity elements of the project commenced in June 2025 and will continue for the length of the project.

The design of the stormwater management improvements is underway with detailed designs being prepared.

Project location map

Jerrys Creek and the bushland located in Crossman Reserve provide vital habitat for several native species, including the platypus, Cumberland Plain land snail , powerful owl , microbat species  and regent honeyeater.

A key goal of this project is to improve the quality of water entering the creek by undertaking a range of interventions to the stormwater outlets and modifications to existing waterbodies. Another key element of this project is to undertake around 3 hectares of weed removal and revegetation of the affected and riparian zone.
