Unlocking a summer oasis in Penrith

This summer, the residents of Penrith are in for a treat as Penrith Beach opens to the public.

This much-anticipated announcement has been a culmination of dedicated efforts by Council, the NSW Government and Penrith Lakes Development Corporation to unlock parts of this prime piece of land for public use.

The same length as Bondi Beach, the natural beach and waterway at Penrith Lakes, just north of the Penrith CBD, will be open 7 days a week from 19 December to 3 March 2024 with the exception of Christmas Day.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said he was delighted Council’s advocacy for the community has come to fruition on this important site just in time for summer.

"Instead of having to drive over an hour to the nearest beach, our residents will be minutes from a fantastic spot to cool off and have fun.

“I want to acknowledge the efforts of Council in getting to this stage. Successive Mayors and Councillors have called on the State Government to open this site to the community – it’s testament to that continued work for our community and Western Sydney that sees us standing here today,” Cr Carney said.

Council’s commitment to this goal is demonstrated in the Advocacy Strategy 2023. Access to Penrith Lakes has been identified as a priority project, highlighting the lakes as an underutilised natural asset that should be made accessible to residents and visitors.

Penrith Lakes presents enormous tourism, recreation, economic and social opportunities to the City and the western Sydney region. Already home to world class Olympic facilities in Sydney International Regatta Centre and Penrith Whitewater Stadium, further investment and access to new open spaces will capitalise on these venues and attract other recreational users.
